Is Jimmy Kimmel a victim of censorship—or just consequences?

The media world is ablaze after ABC affiliates refused to carry Jimmy Kimmel’s show following his comments about Charlie Kirk. Many are calling it censorship. Others say it’s accountability.

Here’s where we need clarity: the First Amendment protects you from government action, not from the fallout of your own words. Free speech means you won’t be jailed for your beliefs. It doesn’t mean your employer—or in Kimmel’s case, his broadcast affiliates—must carry your message.

That’s the crucial distinction between cancel culture and consequences. Cancel culture is an activist mob trying to erase you simply for disagreeing with their worldview. Consequences are when you violate clear standards of decency, professionalism, or moral values—and those you represent decide they won’t be associated with you anymore.

The FCC looms in the background, reminding broadcasters that their licenses require operating “in the public interest.” While that shouldn’t mean policing political opinions, it does mean broadcasters can’t hide behind “free speech” when airing vile or indecent content. The same way you and I can’t cheer an assassination at work and expect our boss to shrug it off.

Freedom isn’t the same as license. You can say what you want, but you’re not immune from the reaction. A healthy society must protect free speech while also demanding moral responsibility. That balance is what separates liberty from chaos.

And here’s the olive branch: this isn’t just about politics. It’s about rejecting evil, restoring decency, and defending a culture where disagreement doesn’t mean destruction. I welcome Americans of every political persuasion to stand together with me on this vital issue.

My friends, one of the greatest lies in politics today is that our rights come from government. They don’t. Our rights come from God, and government’s role is to protect them — not redefine them or hand them out like favors.

When we forget this, freedom is in danger. Because if government can grant your rights, then government can take them away. That’s not liberty — that’s tyranny in disguise.

The Founders understood this truth when they penned the Constitution. And as we head into each new political season, we’d be wise to remember it, too. Our freedoms are not negotiable, and they’re not temporary. They are gifts from our Creator, and it’s our duty to protect them with both courage and grace.
