My friends, on today’s show, I talk with Shelby Campbell, a Democrat running in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District.
Shelby recently went viral after posting a video that mocked the death of Charlie Kirk. It was crude and wrong, and she admits it. But instead of hiding, she came on this program to talk about it. That alone deserves a little credit.
We talked about why she made the video, what she believes now, and how her experiences growing up shaped the way she sees conservatives. I asked direct questions — about faith, free speech, and what it really means to have rights that come from God rather than government.
You’ll hear two people with totally different worldviews talk without shouting. You’ll also hear how easy it can be to find common ground if we slow down long enough to listen.
Shelby said something I think everyone can relate to: “We all want the same things — freedom, family, fairness.”
“We all want the same things — freedom, family, fairness.”
That’s what it’s important to be conservative, not bitter. You can stand firm in truth without losing your humanity in the process — and maybe find some level of common ground along the way, small though it may be.
If you’ve ever wondered whether civility is still possible in politics, this episode will give you hope.

Stay conservative, my friends — and not bitter.

Todd Talk: Mocking Charlie Kirk’s Death Isn’t Bold — It’s Cruel
My friends, Shelby Campbell is a Democrat running for Congress in Michigan’s 13th District. Recently, she mocked Charlie Kirk’s assassination — and the people who mourned him. That isn’t boldness. That’s cruelty.
That kind of cruelty has infected too much of our politics. Too many now treat those they disagree with as targets to destroy, not people to persuade. We can and should work to defeat bad ideas and win elections. But that can’t mean abandoning the moral boundaries that keep us civilized.
Celebrating death clearly crosses that boundary. It isn’t strength. It isn’t justice. It’s moral depravity. I don’t know if Shelby will ever see that, but I hope others do before this poison becomes our new normal.

Listener Mail: “Shot from the Hip”
I got an email from a listener named Matthew after today’s show. He wrote that I might be giving Shelby Campbell too much credit for thinking through her viral video — that it probably wasn’t a carefully planned piece of content, but more of a “shot from the hip.”
That’s a fair point. To clarify, I didn’t mean to suggest she sat down and crafted this thing for hours. My point was simply to contrast the number of steps involved in posting a video versus saying something live on air.
Even if a video is spontaneous, there’s still a process: you have to come up with the idea, record it, maybe write a caption, add hashtags, and then hit post. That’s a few more checkpoints than talking into a microphone.
But hey — sometimes even seasoned communications professionals like me don’t make their point clearly!
I really appreciate Matthew’s note — and his humor. (For the record, I caught the “liberals can’t have much thought process” joke you threw in there, Matt!)
As always, I love hearing from you.
What did you think of the Shelby Campbell interview? Do you think she just posted impulsively, or was it something more?
